Our role in the industry allows us to actively influence and shape sustainable solutions across the sectors we serve – driving progress toward a greener future. But what exactly is decarbonisation, and what strategies are being used to achieve it?

What is decarbonisation?

Decarbonisation refers to the process of reducing or eliminating carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions, particularly those resulting from human activities like burning fossil fuels (coal, oil, and natural gas). It is a key strategy in addressing climate change by transitioning toward low-carbon or carbon-free energy sources and systems.

Decarbonisation tactics are being deployed across a wide range of sectors, many of which Primary Power support from rail and renewables, to recycling and energy.

Battery storage: Powering the energy transition

Battery storage technology is one of the significant technologies in the sector that Primary Power is proud to be part of.

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) allow energy from renewable sources such as solar and wind to be stored and used when it’s needed most. These systems play a crucial role in stabilising the grid and ensuring a reliable supply of clean energy.

For the distribution networks, battery storage offers a diverse range of benefits, including:

· Can be deployed in areas with constrained capacity to support peak loads.

· Applied in a strategic role to support the network frequency during disruptive events.

We believe that strengthening national infrastructure is critical to ensuring low-carbon energy solutions are available across the UK. Just as important is making these technologies even more effective – for example, by improving the efficiency of solar panels to better align with periods of high energy demand.

Driving change from within

Here at Primary Power, we are proud to work with a range of cross sector clients on projects large and small that contribute to these goals. We are also proud to make incremental, positive changes internally wherever we can.

A key example is our commitment to offering an electric vehicle salary sacrifice scheme in collaboration with Loveelectric. This means that our team can save up to 60% on a brand new or preloved electric vehicle compared to other finance methods and save £100s each month on Income Tax and National Insurance.

We currently have nine members of the team driving fully electric vehicles for work and look forward to seeing more employees take advantage of this fantastic scheme in the future.
